"CPTED and Security Officers: Enhancing, Not Replacing, Safety Efforts"

October 2, 2024

Written By Rini de Graaf

Recently, one of our assessors had the opportunity to speak with a journalist who raised an important question regarding the implementation of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) assessments under HB 837 / Florida Statute 768.0706 (2b).

There were concerns that these assessments could be seen as a reason to replace security officers. Our response was clear:

CPTED is not a replacement for security officers—it is a powerful tool that enhances their ability to do their jobs more effectively and safely. For example, CPTED strategies like natural surveillance improve visibility on properties, helping officers better navigate their surroundings, reduce potential hiding spots for offenders, and quickly identify threats or criminal activities.
At the core, CPTED complements the work of security officers, empowering them to continue delivering peace of mind to the communities.
